WPT Backgrounder

Founded in 1989, the World Parrot Trust (WPT) works to conserve wild parrots and promote the welfare of companion parrots worldwide. The WPT has brought together global wildlife conservation and welfare experts to direct and implement effective programs to protect parrots. Our approach is rooted in science, and is based on decades of first hand experience in the field as well as a deep knowledge of companion parrot husbandry and care.

Parrots are the most endangered family of birds in the world. Through field research, hands-on conservation, and education and awareness programs WPT has worked to help more than 80 species of parrot in 45 countries, by:

Saving parrots with direct, hands-on conservation actions
Gaining knowledge through new field research about issues affecting parrots
Helping to improve wildlife law enforcement, and rescue of confiscated birds
Working to protect and restore critical areas of habitat
Reaching out globally to raise awareness of threats and support for conservation actions
Advocating for the better care of companion parrots

We seek a future in which the world’s parrots have the necessary and ongoing protection from human and environmental threats to persist and thrive in the wild, and receive the care they deserve from compassionate caregivers in order to flourish in captivity.
