Empowering Parrot Rescue: WPT Training for Liberian Wildlife Officers at Libassa Ecolodge

In July, the World Parrot Trust organized a training session at Libassa Ecolodge and its wildlife sanctuary in Monrovia. Led by Dr. Steven Janssen, WPT’s Wild Parrot Rescue Coordinator, the session provided specialized training for forensic officers from the Special Wildlife Investigation Unit (SWIU) and field agents from the Wildlife Crime Task Force (WCTF).

Participants gained essential knowledge on first-response care for rescued parrots, covering everything from initial rescue steps to safe transport. Following the theoretical sessions, attendees participated in a practical session, conducting health checks and disease screening on a confiscated flock of parrots at the sanctuary. This hands-on experience was invaluable in equipping local law enforcement with the confidence and skills needed to handle future confiscations safely and effectively.

This workshop was made possible by WCF, the European Union, WPT, and additional support from Focused Conservation.
