ABOUT

Region: Worldwide

In the immense diversity of Earth's wildlife, parrots stand out as some of the most vibrant and intelligent creatures. Their presence in nature and as our cherished companions stirs admiration that has lasted centuries. However, these remarkable birds face challenges that jeopardise their survival in both natural habitats and domestic environments.

Our intense fascination for parrots can inadvertently contribute to their suffering. Grave threats such as trapping, abuse, and neglect are all too common outcomes for many of these long-lived birds. This places parrots in vulnerable situations where their well-being is severely compromised.

Moreover, the illicit trade in parrots brings about significant conservation and welfare challenges, impacting wild populations and individual birds. Parrots may endure terrible living conditions when they are kept in long-term captivity without proper care.

This stems from a widespread lack of understanding regarding their behaviour, dietary needs, and overall welfare requirements. These issues are on a global scale and are entirely preventable with better awareness and action.

In partnership with concerned organisations and individuals, the World Parrot Trust engages in several initiatives to address these challenges:

Providing immediate and long-term help for parrots rescued from trafficking or substandard welfare situations
Advocating for and supporting laws that safeguard the well-being of parrots
Stopping illicit trade and returning parrots to the wild through the FlyFree Program
Creating and distributing multimedia educational materials for parrot caregivers around the globe
Developing multilingual care guides for first responders involved in parrot rescue efforts

The future and health of parrots are responsibilities we collectively hold. By joining forces, we can guarantee the prosperity of these birds in both the wild and as our cherished companions.
