Male-probably green, with red wing patches; also a blue morph in which the general plumage was blue/green with a grey wash; breast, abdomen and undertail coverts slightly paler; head darker in colour and without grey wash; thin black line between cere and eye; black stripes to cheek and black thin band to neck linking with blue/green band; primary feathers green/blue; upperparts to tail blue/green; underparts grey; upper mandible red, lower black. Eye yellow. Female-narrow black stripe to forehead; black stripes to cheek not extending to neck; crown suffused with gray; upper mandible black.

Threat Summary:

These parrots were apparently in decline from the 1760s, when colonization was taking place. A combination of hunting and severe habitat loss caused their demise.

Range:

Formerly confined to the islands of Rodrigues and Mauritius, Indian Ocean.

Habitat:

Inhabited native forest, with Pandanus pines and palms.

Wild Diet:

Birds reportedly preferred the nuts and fruits of Cassine orientale and Fernelia buxifolia.

Ecology and Behaviour:

Undescribed, but presumably similar to that of Psittacula eques.
